Australia 2009/10 - No worries mate, no worries

After graduating college in Germany, I decided to take a year off and go backpacking through Australia. I just turned 20 when I said Goodbye to my mom and dad at the Frankfurt International Airport. I remember watching my mom hold her tears back. I promised myself not to turn around and look back, as I had read somewhere prior to my trip that it means “bad luck”. My first stop was Singapore. It was a loaded 16 hours in the air. I was so excited however you could’ve flown me anywhere at this point.

This was the first time in my life I have left home for this long including the distance. Landing in Australia was like a surreal dream. You see pictures, watch videos or dream about certain places before you decide to go see them in real life. It’s like entering one of your wild dreams. Sometimes I remember I would lay in my hostel bunk bed at night thinking “ you are in Australia, girl”.

I have felt free, open to new adventures, keen to improve my school english, have lots of new experiences, meet people from all over the world and of course try farm work. My first job I got outside of Darwin working on a farm picking watermelons and sorting red onions in a shed all day. The days were long and blistering hot, there was no phone reception, no neighbours, no shops, just the red desert and the farm. Working alongside me were two British guys, two Estonian guys, one girl from London and me. They used to call me the onion queen. I slept in a tent without a mattress for 6 weeks straight before I saved enough money to go on adventures and spend it all.
